Having a party?

The most popular occasion is a birthday. Wives and girlfriends love to hire a belly dancer as a treat for the birthday boy as well as for the rest of the guests. Other popular occasions are retirement parties, holiday parties, office parties, weddings, bachelor parties (G‑rated), anniversaries, Sweet 16, Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah celebrations.

But ladies have birthdays too! It has become very popular to have me come and teach an informal fun class for all‑girl parties such as bachelorette parties, birthday parties, bridal showers, and baby showers. I bring a suitcase full of hipscarves, veils, and finger cymbals and teach all the sexy bellydance moves.

My shows are in good taste and never vulgar. You do not have to send the kids out. In fact, they will be mesmerized by the swirling veils and finger cymbals - just like I was when I was little! My top priority is to make sure everyone has fun and remembers the party as something special. Bellydancing is an exotic art, and I respect it as such. At the same time, I have honed my skills as an entertainer and take great pride in being both an authentic middle-eastern dancer and excellent “showgirl.”

What to expect in a party showShamira poses with the Sultan and his turban

Usually the guest of honor is seated in a chair in the middle of the room, so that all the guests can see his reaction. The music starts (I provide my own CD or ipod) and I come dancing out to a very lively tune, playing my finger cymbals and swirling around, causing great excitement, surprise, and clapping.

Next, I do a slower veil dance, ending with me wrapping a feather boa and/or veil around the birthday boy's shoulders (his "cape"). Then I present either the Sultan's turban or Pharoah's headpiece and place it on his head. The turban is jeweled with a big red feather and the Pharoah is classic Egyptian style black and gold stripes - very shiny and outrageous. If the honored birthday guest is a gal she gets a coined hip scarf and fringed snake headpiece like Cleopatra.

At this point, people are finding it hilarious. So I grab a couple of his male friends and dress them up like palace guards and harem girls. More hysterical laughter. We will feed the Sultan grapes if you like, and I get his friends to dance a little as well. While they are all still flanking the birthday boy, I will usually do a sword routine, where I balance a real sword on my head. People find this mesmerizing.

After that I get the guest of honor and his guards and harem girls up to follow me dancing around the room, so that all the guests can get a close-up look at us and cheer us on. I bring veils for the ladies, they get up as well and help me swirl around the birthday boy/girl. Eventually, everyone is up dancing in the circle. I teach a few bellydance movements that everyone can do. Sometimes we dance around the Sultan. Often, we form a conga line to the tune of Hot Hot Hot. It's great fun and commotion! I will stay and pose for pictures on request.

Planning your party show

Prices vary depending upon length of show requested. Saturday nights are most in demand for a belly dancer and the fee is slightly higher. The most popular request is for a 15 to 20 minute show, known in the business as a “bellygram.”

I travel anywhere in the tri-state area and beyond I can reasonably drive to in a day. Of course this means anywhere in Bergen County - North Jersey, northern New Jersey (Hudson County, Union County, Passaic County, Essex County, Middlesex County), New York City (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island), Westchester County, Monmouth County, and Ocean County (my second home). It also includes Long Island, central NJ, the Jersey Shore (Toms River, Brick, Point Pleasant, Lavallette, Belmar, Spring Lakes, Manasquan, Lake Como, Seaside), lower upstate NY, Connecticut, even Boston. Looking for a belly dancer in New Brunswick or Bridgeport? Or in Trenton or Poughkeepsie? I love bellydancing and I love a good road trip. Just give me a snack for the drive home while you bask in the glow of how I helped make your party a hit!
